This inner west terrace had recently been transformed with a modern architectural extension to the rear. As you venture via the character filled hallway you are greeted by a paved courtyard that is defined by three glass walls. Even though our clients are well travelled and have a strong sense of style and character, this personality ceased to exist within the courtyard.
The main challenges faced by the team at OUTHOUSE design was the different micro climates within the courtyard created by surrounding building heights. This coupled with privacy issues and the fact that the courtyard flooring is a concrete slab with poor drainage made the idea of creating a garden oasis quite the challenge.
We started with selecting a range of bespoke oversized copper planters, this brings strength of character to the space, enables us to plant deciduous feature trees for all year-round interest, as well as a variety of shrubs and scented groundcovers. Each planter is up lit, defining its cube shape and reflecting the buildings architecture. With time the rich patina of the planters will become more distinct.
For privacy we designed an overhead structure, the selected pattern ensures plenty of light into the space, whilst still creating a sense of privacy. The curved shape of the structure allows for a supportive daybed/seating structure and place to get away for those lazy afternoons.
A water feature creates that extra layer of interest and by constructing with recycled bricks, blends with the character of the home and can be viewed from all aspects of house. Additional light weight planters are located on the vertical to soften the space and once again creates a lush sense of green.
